This, among other things, will prevent us from having to uninstall applications individually or in groups. To do this, the Mountain View giant has a system in mind Archiving of applications. We have seen a similar system on Windows 11: the operating system in fact allows you to archive applications to ensure that these take up less space.

Android has a new method in mind to free up space on your smartphone by up to 60%. Here is the news coming soon and how it will work

App storage is a new feature that will allow users to temporarily recover 60% of the storage space of an app. This functionality will remove parts of the app instead of uninstalling it completely. Archived application will keep the user's data and when he has to use it again, it will be easy restored to the latest version downloading all those parts that he had deleted.

Basically what it will do is convert the app to a Very small APK which will retain user data until the app is reset and all data is downloaded again. Google announces that it will take the first step with the release of the tool bundle tool 1.10, making application storage available to all developers who already use the App Bundle to build applications. For developers using Android Gradle Plugin 7.3, the company will start generating a new type of APK: APK archived.

Google makes it clear that even if they start creating Archived APKs now, they won't reach users until this Android feature is launched before the end of the year. The company has not provided any dates for the moment. It may be a new feature of the Google Play Store, with a new section for app storage, and may come integrated into Android 13.
