ColorOS 12 is official, at least in China. After seeing the official list of smartphones that will receive it, today Oppo has decided to unveil the customization of its smartphones (and OnePlus in China) based on Android 12. Oppo has made a lot of design changes in the ColorOS 12. The company overhauled the user interface based on the Infinite Design concept, with redesigned icons, new animations, avatar emojis, and more. The Android skin now features acrylic icons a crafts squirl which have a consistent shape across the board, unlike those of ColorOS 11. Icons use softer colors but they retain details and textures that are not devoid of resolution and compactness.
Oppo has also optimized the placement of UI elements in ColorOS 12 for better manage information density. As we can see in the images, the Android 12-based skin has all of its UI elements well spaced, leaving plenty of white space to help users to easily differentiate information.
New features of ColorOS 12
ColorOS 12 includes new features (albeit few) in addition to those introduced by Google in Android 12. The company has improved the feature FlexDrop to encourage multitasking and now allows users to drag an app with a simple gesture and switch between screen display mode, small window and mini window.
ColorOS 12 also carries Smart Sidebar 2.0, with six new tools. These tools can help users quickly play songs from the web in the Music Player app or compare prices on e-commerce sites. Oppo also introduced a new one cross-screen interconnect functionality to simplify connectivity between phones and PCs. The feature allows users to control your phones with your PC, share files with each other and edit documents stored on your phone. Cross-screen interconnect is compatible with most Windows 10 laptops
In addition to all this, Oppo has also introduced the brand new features of car screen projection in ColorOS 12. These features offer support for multiple third party apps, such as Kuwo, Ximalaya, Baidu Maps, AutoNavi, etc., allowing users to easily access them on the car screen. Clearly, for now, we are talking about applications that only work in China.
The new skin also includes an avatar emoji feature called "Omoji“, Which can create high-precision 3D models using an advanced Face Capture algorithm.
Improvements on several fronts
Oppo has made some improvements significant at performance to ensure users have an exceptional experience using ColorOS 12 on their devices. The Android skin packs the Quantum Animation Engine of Oppo which brings 300 improved animations, giving users a smooth and realistic browsing experience. The company claims that these animations mimic "Physical habits of resistance, inertia and rebound" to make the experience overall “More realistic, fluid and intuitive”.
To address the lags and stutters in the UI, Oppo has included a AI anti-lag engine in ColorOS 12. He claims he can “Effectively reduce the generation of fragments by processing cold and hot data separately”. He continues saying: "In a test conducted at Oppo technical laboratories, the results showed that with this technology, after a phone was simulated for 36 months of continuous use, the reduction in read / write performance was less than 5% and the overall aging rate was only 2.75%."
Enhanced privacy and security on ColorOS 12
ColorOS 12 also contains the new privacy and security features introduced in Android 12. It will now notify users when an app uses the microphone, camera or location of the phone. Its permissions reminder feature will send notifications for prevent third-party apps from collecting background data. And it also offers detailed permissions management to help users understand various permissions and manage them.
