Fastweb chooses Qualcomm for the new 5G broadband solution

The Italian telecommunications company Fastweb is one of several European companies that first adopted the fixed wireless access (FWA) based on 5G mmWave. He announced that the equipment needed to expand this service (CPE), which provides the new type of "broadband", will be based on Qualcomm Snapdragon X55 modem. We know this model very well. It is in fact the modem announced last year by Qualcomm which is still integrated into the best smartphones with 5G connectivity. Let's go see the details.

Fastweb and Qualcomm confirm their multi-year collaboration: the new generation WiFi Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) it will be carried out by the US company

In accordance to revealed by the company itself, Fastweb will provide broadband connections to 12 million homes (i.e. 45% of the Italian population) with speeds up to 1 Gbps by 2024 with the aim of close the digital divide in disadvantaged areas of the country. This means, in pennies terms, that almost half of the Italian population, even if they live in disadvantaged geographical locations, will be able to use the aforementioned broadband. Municipalities with connection difficulties and still subject to "wired technology" will solve a big problem.

Fastweb chooses Qualcomm for the new 5G broadband solution

After two years of intense preparation working with Qualcomm to run network tests, Fastweb is now ready to commercially launch its 5G FWA service on mmWave in 50 cities in Italy. These will grow to 500 in the next year.

We are very satisfied with the collaboration with Qualcomm Technologies which has allowed us to find the best technological solution to offer our service. With the launch of our Ultra FWA connections we bring connectivity up to 1 Giga even in those areas that until now were not covered by ultra broadband connections

Andrea Lasagna, Fastweb chief technology officer

But how will it work?

Based on the information we have, some sort of digital control unit in homes. Such equipment will be powered by the Qualcomm X55 proprietary modem which will allow speed and zero lag in the wireless connection. An undoubtedly important step for our country that it lacks digital culture and awareness of Internet use.
