Pixel 6 may have Ultra Wideband (UWB) support

One of the latest news about Google Pixel 6 it concerns the processor. It should be the first smartphone from the Mountain View company to be equipped with a proprietary SoC, called Whitechapel. However, the device could be a turning point for the company in other senses as well. To join the exclusivity of the processor, there may also be support for the UWB or Ultra Wideband technology. What is it about? We have also seen it in the Apple Air Tag.

Pixel 6 could be very similar in terms of connectivity to Apple AirTags: support for Ultra Wideband (UWB) technology is expected

Wireless communication technology UWB extension is used in smart home devices and smart trackers due to their ability to know the location and even the orientation of the device. Apple and Samsung are among the first to use this technology in their latest smartphones, but it appears that Google could follow suit already starting with the Pixel 6 before the end of the year.

Google isn't exactly one that sets new trends but sometimes even tries to create a new one like its (unfortunate technology) Project Salts based on sonar on Pixel 4. Anyway, second Mishaal Rahman of XDA Developers, Google may implement the support for UWB on Android 12. This in itself is a good thing as it creates a UWB API standard across the platform, allowing all smartphone manufacturers to support the technology.

But the really interesting thing emerges from the "prototype" on which this technology is being tested, or "ravens". This name is used to identify a Pixel with Whitechapel, also known as GS101 or Google Silicon. In other words, this UWB support could debut on Pixel 6 before the end of the year.

That said, it's the first time we've heard of this feature, so there are no guarantees on the timing of its release. It will also be interesting to see where Google plans to use UWB, as it does not yet have smart speakers or smart trackers that use the technology. It is not excluded that everything will be made official atI / O 2021 this month.
