LG Innotek and Corning working on liquid lens technology for smartphones

LG Innotek and Corning working on liquid lens technology for smartphones

The news was leaked thanks to some patents that were recently spotted online. Both brands have 50-50 stakes in the nine patents related to liquid lens technology. The main technologies listed in these patents include a liquid lens system, such as controlling a camera lens (which features the liquid lens) and a tool that varies the curvature of the lens. The liquid lens has a bag shaped lens made of vinyl with liquid material. Hence, the lens is able to move in and out of focus depending on the curvature of the liquid which can be changed with a voltage current.

Put simply, unlike a conventional lens, the liquid lens doesn't have to move to control the focal length. This would allow smartphone makers to make thinner camera modules as the liquid lens changes as per requirements and does not physically move. Furthermore, it could also bring various improvements to the camera performance of smartphones.
