MediaTek Helio G85: here are the features of the new gaming SoC

The G at the end of the name says it all. Although initially the specifications of this processor did not make the eyes shine, by virtue of the benchmark scores, on paper it turns out to be a nice low-cost gem. The new processor MediaTek Helio G85 is the SoC that we find mounted on the brand new device of Xiaomi (or better Redmi), that is the Redmi Note 9. The reason for choosing a MediaTek is clear: it costs less than the chipsets of the same range as the US competitor Qualcomm. IS the quality is there, let's be clear. In the past year, the Taiwanese company has been making great strides.

MediaTek Helio G85 was presented yesterday by the homonymous company: here are all the features of the new processor

Il MediaTek Helio G85 looks like the direct descendant of the G80. It is built with a 1 lithographic process2nm (far from the Qualcomm Snapdtagon 875, subject of leaks recently) and it is a octa-core formed by 2 ARM Cortex-A75 clocked at 2.0 GHz and 6 ARM Cortex-A55 l clocked at 1.8 GHz. The GPU is a Mali-G52 "pumped" up to a frequency of 1 GHz. So it remains unchanged compared to the predecessor as a type of GPU but increases the frequency by 50Hz.

The name clearly speaks of an optimization at the gaming level and is also understood from the infographic above. The maximum supported photo sensor is from 25 megapixel and can process photographs with maximum resolution up to 48 megapixels. The enhancements that the processor offers in gaming are due to the suite HyperEngine.

The SoC also includes the MediaTek neural engine, which allows you to speed up apps in Computer Vision (CV) such as Google Lens and all AR services. Unfortunately, it is not a processor that supports 5G: in fact, we only find support for 4G, WiFi 5 and Bluetooth 5.0.

The first device in the world to mount this SoC was Redmi Note 9, the last of the brand in chronological line. We expect that in the course of 2020 many other mid-ranges will adopt the same processor given its low cost.
