Motorola and the mission you do not know: to preserve linguistic minorities

Motorola it is a company that many do not consider much, perhaps due to its past. But if we look at the brand's initiatives, not just technological, we will understand that it has many of those missions interesting that we didn't even know. The mission we are talking about today is Motorola's will to protect linguistic minorities. How? By adding minority languages within the operating system of its smartphones.

Motorola added three minority languages to its smartphones - Cherokee, Kaingang and Nheengatu for a mission no one knew

Motorola announced today one partnership with the Lenovo Foundation which will include the Cherokee language, of the indigenous people living in the United States. The language will appear in the user interface of your compatible devices Android 12. According to the brand, the initiative is part of the mission of bringing technology to everyone, as well as contributing to survival of endangered indigenous languages and cultures. All this, according to the UNESCO definitions.

Motorola pointed out that the Cherokee language was chosen for several reasons. These include: the percentage of native speakers, the limited access to mobile technologies and the availability of experts and academics in the linguistic field. Also according to Motorola, the aim of the project is to support this language and be a bridge between the elderly who speak Cherokee (with little access to technology) and young people (connected, but away from the language).

The inclusion of Cherokee in Motorola devices comes thanks to the support of linguistic experts from Cherokee Nation. The company also said it expects other similar inclusive actions in the tech sector. There are estimated to be over 400.000 Cherokee citizens in the United States. It is the largest of the 567 indigenous organizations recognized by the local government. However, less than 2% of this population still speak the language and the majority are elderly.

Cherokee isn't the only indigenous language on Motorola smartphones. Since last year, all branded devices launched with Android 11 or later include languages kaingang (spoken in the southern and southeastern regions of Brazil) and Nheengatu (from the Amazon).
