When you buy a smartphone you often do it without thinking about what the future of this device will be, indeed too many times we focus only on the technical data sheet, thus leaving out a fundamental aspect, namely that related to updates. We are not referring to the updates related to the system interfaces customized by the various OEMs but to the major updates related to the Android operating system. Counterpoint Research, a company dedicated to market analysis, has published a report on software and security updates for Android devices, in which we find Nokia as the best brand in this field, taking it far ahead of the competition, holding this credit for the second consecutive year.
Nokia, as you well know, has been part of the HMD Global group for a few years and over the last year has updated 20 of its smartphones to the latest (indeed penultimate) Android 10 software release. Smartphones that were sold between the third quarter of 2019 and the second quarter of 2020. In addition, in the reliability ranking prepared by Counterpoint Research, Nokia phones are classified into 3 out of 4 categories: updates, safety and build quality.
Unfortunately, many users know very well that many manufacturers often neglect the care and importance of Android updates as well as the fact that they often forget to update even mobile security patches, leaving users exposed to the vulnerabilities of the case. According to the Counterpoint Research report, Nokia and OnePlus are the only two brands to be the exception to what has been stated.
Nokia: best Android brand in terms of updates
Both companies have updated to Android 10 absolutely all their phones launched on the market between the third quarter of 2019 and the second quarter of 2020. In the case of Nokia, 20 smartphones have benefited from the major release of the green robot while in the case 7 terminals of OnePlus have benefited from Android 10. For both brands these values constitute 100% in terms of the ratio between the device launched and the update received. The rest of the ranking sees brands such as Samsung (89%), Realme (73%) and Xiaomi (68%) which together make up the 5 brands that most update to Android 10.
In addition to this, Nokia also does well with regard to security patches, being the only brand to have performed security updates monthly. OnePlus was able to update the security of 90% of its phones but those who really did a bad job are brands like OPPO with 16%, LG with 18% and Samsung with a measly 22%. Realme and Xiaomi, on the other hand, kept the safety of their mobile phones updated monthly, by 70% and 67% respectively.
Finally, Counterpoint Research points out that Nokia smartphones have above-average production quality. In their research they indicate that Nokia devices performed better than the global average in multiple endurance tests such as drops, pressure, wear and scratches, moisture and liquids, etc. So, if you are looking for a durable mobile, both for Android updates and endurance, you should now pay more attention to Nokia.
