OPPO A52 review - He is the SMARTPHONE TO BUY under € 150

Find a smartphone under 200 euros that it is reliable and complete is almost an impossible task, but brands such as OPPO seem to have the solution and although the device we have in our hands has already been on the market for some time, it seems that the various reviewers have snubbed it . So here we propose the our complete review di OPPO A52 available directly on Amazon Italy at a more than fair price.

Price updated on: 19 April 2024 9:32

The unboxing experience for this OPPO A52 is the same we are used to with other terminals of the same price range, but also from this trivial experience we immediately understand that the terminal wants to stand out, inserting inside as well as a screen saver film ed a protective cover, also an pair of earphones well made, thus making the smartphone immediately ready for use without having to buy additional accessories. In any case, we summarize the contents of the package which includes the following equipment:

  • OPPO A52;
  • Multilingual Quick Guide and Guarantee Sheet (including Italian);
  • Pin for removing the SIM tray;
  • Soft silicone cover reinforced on the corners;
  • Plastic film for screen protection already pre-applied;
  • USB Type-C charging and data transfer cable;
  • Semi-in-ear wired earphones;
  • Charger with European plug and 5V / 2A (10W) - 9V / 2A (18W) output.

SAR values (limits: 10g for head and body / 2,0 W / Kg - 10g for limbs / 4,0 W / Kg):
- Head: 0,44 W / Kg
- Body: 1,29 W / Kg

OPPO A52 is renewed compared to the previous generation A series even if it does not change the aesthetics too much, which on the whole, however, appears pleasant and modern. We have in our hands a not quite compact device, which is characterized in dimensions equal to 162,0 x 75,5 x 8,9 mm and a weight of 192 grams, but the ergonomics of the terminal is not compromised, thanks to the 3D design curved on the 4 edges, making it pleasant to handle even with a single hand, even if it is preferable to hold it with two hands in the most difficult situations. The smartphone surprises at the level build quality, Despite the plastic material used on the whole back cover, which however is enriched by a process that gives back light games such as to make it look like glass. On the other hand, the profiles of the telephone are pastel, which offer nothing at the top, while they offer us the entrance at the bottom jack from 3,5 mm, main microphone, charging input Type-C with OTG support and speaker that in combination with the ear capsule offers stereo sound.

On the left edge we have two buttons for volume adjustment and the hole for extracting the SIM tray, which allows insertion 2 SIM cards in nano format and 1 slot dedicated to memory expansion via micro SD up to 256 GB, without renouncing the functionality of the Dual SIM Dual Standby. Specularly we find a small inlet where it is inserted the power button / shutdown that complements also the fingerprint reader. This is a very important distinctive element because in the first place it makes the smartphone appear as belonging to a higher range, since the reader is not inserted on the back cover, thus making you imagine that you have an AMOLED display as a dowry but above all it is very comfortable in the use, for example allowing the release even when resting on a surface both on the front and on the rear.

The reader integrated in the power button is definitely responsive and reliable, also allowing us to take photos, block access to apps or enable payment in some scenarios. In any case, to unlock the phone we can always rely on theUnlock Face through the front camera, which was also reliable even in conditions that are not exactly favorable in lighting.

Returning to the rear of OPPO A52, in addition to the various stylized certifications together with the company logo, as the only interrupting element we have a rectangular photo module in which are inserted the 4 optics of the photographic sector and a single tone LED flash.

Strangely we don't find a second microphone for the reduction of environmental noise during the call or at least I have not found it and if it is present, this is well hidden, but in any case the audio on call was very good and crystal clear in both directions of the voice , but what really amazed me about this OPPO A52 is the presence stereo sound that is released by the system speaker on the lower profile in combination with the ear capsule. The volume is very generous without ever distorting and even the bass seems pretty warm. Overall, a more than discreet sound so as to be able to use the speakers also as a speakerphone in the car, although in this mode the sound comes only from the single speaker. A sound experience that can also be further enhanced in terms of quality with the use of wired earphones that will allow access to the Real HD Sound function, a technology developed by OPPO and which provides a DIRAC smart type, adapting to the type of multimedia content running, while at the codec level we find the presence of aptX HD.

On the front stands a large type display IPS from 6,50 inches with resolution Full HD + (2400 x 1080 pixels), 1500: 1 contrast covering 90,50% of the total area. The large surface is interrupted only by the presence of a punch hole in which the selfie camera is drowned, an element that gives a certain charm to OPPO A52 and which, moreover, does not create any nuisance to the vision of the notification icons, which remain permanently on the status bar until they are read. The hole is further enhanced by a beautiful animation vortex every time we turn on the display or switch to the selfie camera from the camera app. A truly hypnotic gem that joins the fact that the company has already pre-applied one screen saver film to protect against unwanted scratches.

Returning to the display, this is very bright and readability even in direct sunlight is a plus, thanks to the 480 nits peak. The color rendering of the panel is more than satisfactory, excellent viewing angles and colors rather faithful to reality. We also have the Widevine L1 DRM certification, therefore being able to enjoy streaming movies and TV series in high definition on platforms such as Netflix while on Amazon Prime Video this benefit has not yet been recognized. Finally, there is no lack of functions such as dark mode or the one for the eye protection from blue light radiation, as well as the possibility to calibrate the color temperature in a fine way to your liking. Fortunately, there is no lack of double touch to activate the screen as well as the possibility of animating it simply by lifting the smartphone, but also the possibility of reversing the order of the keys (back and menu) or hiding them completely using the full screen gesture.

To end the overview of the design, the proximity and brightness sensors and the ear capsule, rather wide, have been inserted above the display allowing a good listening on call even when we do not place the smartphone precisely on our ear. Unfortunately, a notification LED is absent, which would have facilitated the user for reporting notifications, given the absence of the Always On Display. The frames are in line with what is offered with the competition, however they are well optimized and that on the whole do not bother the sight.

OPPO A52 does not exceed in the hardware equipment, confirming a great classic in the mid-range of smartphones. In fact, under the hood we find the processor Qualcomm Snapdragon 665 octacore with maximum clock at 2.0 GHz alongside which one Adreno GPU 6104 GB of RAM memory of type LPDDR4X  e 64 GB of internal storage XMMUM eMMC expandable via micro SD. The coupled CPU / RAM does not disappoint allowing the user, in any situation, to benefit from fluidity and stability of the system without ever recognizing any overheating even after considerable stress caused by games that require huge effort on the part of CPU and GPU.

At the level of connectivity, finally, there is no lack of WiFi 802.11 a / b / g / n / ac dual band (2.4 / 5.0 GHz), Bluetooth 5.0, GPS / GLONASS / A-GPS / Beidou / GALILEO quick fix and always present signal coverage. We don't have the FM radio while the desired NFC sensor is present for mobile payments via smartphone. Perhaps it is useless to underline it, but Wifi, Bluetooth, GPS and NFC have always done their job in wonders without ever showing signs of uncertainty.

Promoted the reception and surfing on the net, in general always of a good level, thanks also to the 20 band support as well as the possibility of using the 4G connectivity for both SIM cards with Dual 4G function or use VoLTE. During the test period we have not encountered reception problems, it is very fast to switch from 3G to 4G and also the Wi-Fi signal has always been very stable.

Then a no problem with the hardware and nothing to complain even at the software level, which on OPPO A52 is based on Android 10 with May 2020 security patch and proprietary interface Color OS 7.1. I will not dwell much on the explanation of the features made available by ColorOS which on the whole compared to the previous generation is renewed a lot from the aesthetic point of view, providing itself with a less oriental and slightly more minimal interface. However, there are goodies not to be underestimated as the possibility to clone applications for example, to have a second instance of Whatsapp on a single phone, or it game space with which to increase the general performance in the gaming phase, as well as a series of tools that facilitate everyday life, without having to resort to third-party apps, such as for example record the screen or currency converter integrated in the calculator, the RELAX mode which through relaxing sounds reconciles rest and sleep, or the SoLoop tool to edit videos in a creative and immediate way etc .. But we also have a series of gestures on screen off to quickly recall certain actions and / or applications.

In terms of autonomy, OPPO for its A52 brings all the experience gained over time and puts it to work with a unit from 5000 mAh with predisposition for fast charging at 18W. In any case, the smartphone will take us to the evening without any effort and, for the most thrifty, even at the end of the next day. It is not difficult, in fact, to arrive at 7 / 8 display hours on, even if this is a value poco significant. It is only necessary to report a ROM-level BUG, that is to view the battery usage statistics in days instead of hours.

Finally, we come to the last aspect of the smartphone that is always close to the heart of all users who are preparing to buy a new device, namely the qualitative rendering of photos and videos that in OPPO A52 is expressed with a rear photographic compartment in which there are well 4 rooms. The primary sensor is a unit from 12 megapixel, opening ffinal match. with 1.25nm pixel surface and dimensions of 1 / 2.8 ", which if necessary also allows the capture of photos in Macro mode, accompanied by a second sensor ultra wide angle da 8 megapixel, opening  ffinal match. e 119 ° FOV, while the remaining two sensors have resolution from 2 MP and opening ffinal match. both of which perform the data collection function for the bokeh effect in portrait mode.

The selfie camera instead consists of a primary sensor from 16 megapixel, opening ffinal match.. But before I tell you about the photo rendering, I want to underline the fact that this OPPO A52, with a market value of less than 200 euros, offers the possibility of record videos in 4K to 30 fps but especially supports Anti-Shake function allowing you to record clear and stable videos. We can also record in wide angle mode (in this case only at 720p 30 fps) as well as in slow motion at 120 fps and time lapse, with truly appreciable results, as well as the captured sound is perfect. Also the focus it is quick and precise while interesting is the possibility of using a 5X digital zoom to get closer to the framed subject without noticing a particular loss of definition.

Among the functions of the software camera we find theAutomatic HDR but also notable filters applicable to photos in real time, the beauty mode and the presence of theAI which recognizes certain scenarios by automatically setting the best shooting parameters, a function that I have always left active as it has not been aggressive, but can still be disabled from the settings. Finally, there is also the expert mode in which to manually set ISO values, shutter speeds, white balance, focus and exposure, as well as having the function integrated Google Lens, mode Overview and cute Stickers with which to embellish photos, but also videos in real time, a function that is definitely suitable for younger people to share nice shots on various social networks.

Finally, there is also the Night mode that thanks to the wide aperture of the sensor guarantees a more full-bodied capture of light, bringing out the natural colors of the framed scene without distortion. At least this is what the company declares, while in reality the camera sector for night shots does not do much better or worse than the competition, even if it must be admitted that this mode greatly raises the photos at night that otherwise would show a ' high dominant digital noise. The photos during the day, on the other hand, are decidedly pleasant and characterized by bright and genuine colors, but overall (I repeat) the yield is overall identical to the competitors in the same market segment. On the positive side we have the fact that the Snapdragon 665 processor is already tested to support the installation of GCam Mod, software that could greatly increase the final quality of the photographs. Overall OPPO A52 lends itself better to videos than to photos, which however are more than enough.

PROJECTED IMPACT

We have therefore been able to see and find that OPPO A52 convinces overall under each point discussed. Good autonomy, good multimedia performance with complete sensors, stereo sound and 4K video with digital stabilization. Even the software is appreciated for its reliability which on the whole makes this smartphone suitable for every user, young or old who is skilled or neophyte. We are faced with a really valid smartphone for the asking price, in my opinion one of the best under the 200 euro range which in its way stands out from the whole equal mass.
