Oppo and Qualcomm present variable resolution rendering technology: what it is and how it works

Oppo He really cares about the image quality on his smartphones and the devices are a prime example of this Find X3 and Find X3. The support of the end-to-end 10-bit color and WCG photography with Full Link color management made the devices the most popular. The display, therefore, is a key point of the company's strategy. But today we have news of one new technology developed together with Qualcomm. It is the variable resolution rendering. Let's see what it is and how it works.

Oppo and Qualcomm still together, this time for variable resolution rendering: image quality on smartphones at extreme levels

As revealed by the company itself, Oppo, Qualcomm e NetEase (well-known brand that deals with video games and in general in the digital video game sector) have entered into a partnership to enhance the multimedia sector of smartphones. How? Through the variable resolution rendering technology. The first smartphone to use this technology is Oppo Find X3 Pro. But how does grace work?

In a nutshell, taking advantage of the processor Snapdragon 888 , Adreno GPU 660, the Find X3 Pro manages to color the pixels not individually but in blocks. Groups of 4 pixels are colored with the same tonality and this allows, in fact, to reduce the amount of pixels in the total area by 40%. It is understood that this type of technology can only be used by smartphones that have a very high resolution. In fact, if this were not the case, the general quality of the images would go down instead of up. On a very high-level screen like the one in the Oppo Find X3, even if the number of pixels decreases, the level of image quality remains excellent.

But now let's see what this technology entails. There are three improvements: high image quality (although the pixels decrease), a high frame rate and a low energy consumption. Through this technology, also called VRS, the workload on the GPU decreases and therefore performance increases. The data disclosed by the company are the following:

  • + 30% performance
  • + 38.1% framerate
