The front sensor can sometimes be implemented not in the most usual ways, but the essence remains the same. But how about one side camera? Oppo is considering integrating a camera on the right side of the smartphone. Clearly this is only possible with a flat screen!
This decision is described in a recent Oppo patent. The patent was filed in February and approved today and is called "Electronic device and method of controlling the direction of image acquisition for it". According to Oppo's idea, the side camera is useful, even if not necessary. This solution should allow you to better deal with scenarios in which you have to shoot a moving object. And the camera on the side will allow you to do this without moving the smartphone.

The highlight is that it's not really an add-on camera to all effects. Only the lens fits the side edge. A system of mirrors will be placed inside, which will allow the main module to use both the lens in the main camera block on the back cover, and the side lens. This should contain costs as neither the additional sensor itself nor the space to place it is needed.
True, such a solution it makes impossible any scenario that could be realized if there was a completely separate camera on the side edge. Given the specificity of the idea, it is by no means a given that it will ever be implemented in a series product.
