Qualcomm Snapdragon 875: We now know its code name

Knowing the modus operandi of the past years, the next generation flagship processor produced by Qualcomm Snapdragon 875 will be unveiled in the fourth quarter of this year. We will then have to wait until the first quarter of 2021 to find it inside a commercially available smartphone.

Well, today some details have emerged about the new generation SoC. The famous leakster Roland Quandt would in fact have revealed that the Snapdragon 875 (SM8350) adopts the code name "Lahaina". That is the name of a city of Maui, one of the seven islands in Hawaii.

While a previous leak indicated that the next generation Qualcomm chipset will adopt the name Snapdragon 875G instead of Snapdragon 875. Having said that, the American tech giant has yet to confirm the official name, so for now we will continue to call it Snapdragon 875.

As for specifications, the new flagship processor will be based on a 5nm production process. In addition, Qualcomm reportedly will introduce a combination of very large cores, therefore Cortex X1 + Cortex A78. ARM describes in detail the architecture of the Cortex X1 core and states that it will be able to provide 30% higher performance than that of the Cortex-A77 and 23% higher than the maximum performance of the Cortex-A78 core. Finally, the new Cortex X1 is expected to be twice as fast in machine learning than the Cortex-A78.
