Realme 5 Pro review - He is NOT a Best Buy

Realme has been active on the smartphone market since poco more than a year and in this short period of time it has been able to create a good reputation for its very interesting devices with the common line of the excellent value for money. With Realme 5 Pro, the brand has proposed a rather balanced hardware terminal net of satisfying performances, so much so that many have used the best buy name for him. Will he have managed to win our trust? Let's find out better inside ours Full review.

As per tradition, we start by observing the contents of the sales package where we find:

  • Realme 5 Pro;
  • USB Type-C charging and data transfer cable;
  • Wall power supply with European plug and max output 5V / 4A (20W);
  • Protective silicone cover;
  • Multilingual instruction manual and quick guide;
  • Pin for removing the SIM slot.

Realme 5 Pro certainly does not shine for innovation in terms of design resulting similar to the many devices on the current market. From his though, he enjoys the rear of a particular geometric texture able to give particular plays of light than in coloring Crystal Green, stands out even more in the scenic effect. We are faced with one compact smartphone, with measures equal to 157 x 74.2 x 8.9 mm, and a weight of 188 grams, which makes it attractive to those looking for good handling. It is not clear whether the shell is made of plastic or protected by glass, the fact is that you will certainly have to pay attention not to ruin it, perhaps relying on the protective cover provided.

Price updated on: 28 March 2024 9:10

Covers that even if they do their protection work very well, will make you practically screen gestures are unusable MIUI style, therefore you will have to opt for the use of the screen buttons, as you create a annoying step between the cover and the display. The surface of the posterior results poco oleophobic, holding onto a universe of footprints. Here we find the presence of the camera block accompanied by a single flash LED and fingerprint sensor, almost flush, which works perfectly and which can also be associated with some functions such as photo shooting or blocking access to certain apps.

For sure made of plastic is the side frame which enjoys a pleasant satin finish. Here we find the power button on the right while the volume and lo keys on the left SIM card slot that can accommodate two SIM cards in nano format with 4G connectivity on both slots plus a third slot for the micro SD card, in order to expand the integrated memory without renouncing the Dual SIM Dual Standby functionality. A layer of black plastic has also been inserted between the body surface and the display, a real eye-catcher for all style lovers. As mentioned for the X2 model, also in this case the combination of power and volume + or - keys enable some shortcuts, such as screenshots and silent mode, but the position of the keys with respect to the natural handle of the device too often activates these functions, which in the end are more of an inconvenience than anything else.

On the upper part we find only the secondary microphone for the suppression of environmental noise, while in the lower part we find the hole 3,5 mm jack for headphones, the entrance USB Type-C, the main microphone and it mono system speaker.

The sound returned by the latter results slightly unbalanced towards the high tones, but the decidedly generous volume allows it to be heard even in rather noisy environments. However at the software level, if you use wired earphones, it is present an equalizer with presets preset according to the musical genre, or refine the individual sound channels according to your musical taste.

The display Realme 5 Pro is one of the most interesting features. In fact, we find a panel supplied LCD IPS da 6,3 inches diagonal, with resolution FHD + (2340 x 1080 pixels), density of PPI 409 and form factor in 19.5:9, covering the 90,6% of the available surface. The peculiarity, however, lies in the fact that the company has equipped this mid-range with HDR technologythus allowing a better view of content that benefits from this technology. Good viewing angles, colors that are very faithful to reality and a good black and white point, as well as excellent visibility in direct sunlight they contribute to the good final and qualitative rendering of the contents used.

We also find the real presence of the Widevine level 1 certification, while at the software level there is also the possibility of calibrating the colors, the reading mode and also the dark theme, although the latter is still unripe as it is not optimized for all applications, sometimes even the system ones.

On the upper part of the display there is a notch to drop which houses the selfie camera while poco above is inserted the ear capsule accompanied by proximity and brightness sensors, which behave perfectly. If you were asking, the answer is YES, notifications remain permanently visible despite the presence of the notch.

To complain, however, the sound in the capsule and the capture of the sound of the microphones, results in my opinion always subdued. Attention I do not mean that the quality is poor, but that the volume has always been a hair under the need of the moment. Maybe I'll be getting old ...

realme 5 pro

The hardware configuration of Realme 5 Pro is very respectable, featuring a Qualcomm Soc Snapdragon 712, with architecture 2 x 2.3 GHz Kryo 360 Gold + 6 x 1.7 GHz Kryo 360 Silver, an octa-core CPU with a maximum clock frequency of 2,3 GHz, equipped with a 10nm production process and an Adreno 616 GPU. For our variant we also have support 8GB RAM of type LPDDR4X128GB of storage internal type UFS 2.1, further expandable via microSD with support up to 256 GB.

If you are at least hulled with various initials, you immediately understand that we are facing ultra fast memories and although we can not speak of a top of the range, Realme 5 Pro manages to satisfy most needs, even the most "driven" ones. I have never seen any slowdown or lag in general, therefore synonymous with reliability. In all respects, Realme 5 Pro maintains satisfactory performance, reaching good levels of satisfaction even in the gaming field, with heavier titles like Fortnite, Asphalt 9, Call of Duty Mobile etc .. Do not expect, however, to find several apps open in the background even after some time since the last use. It seems, in fact, that the system wants to maintain a fairly conservative approach from this point of view.

BENCHMARK

The system interface on which this Realme 5 Pro is based, i.e. the ColorOS 6.1 on a base Android 9 Pie e security patches updated in December 2019, thanks to the latest update released by the company which also introduced some news (below the changelog screenshot). The first impact with this firmware is quite positive, full of features but perhaps a little too confusing. In fact, we often get lost in the menus in search of some function which we then discover to be present in some other menu.

Probably the new ColorOS 7 will fix many of the gaps and imperfections, therefore it is better to postpone the judgment to the release of the new interface, which on this Realme 5 Pro should take place by the end of the first half of the year.

The rest of the Realme 5 Pro hardware specifications consists of a Dual band WiFi, Bluetooth 5.0 and a great one GPS with coupling of Galileo satellites, in addition to the 4G LTE network with rather satisfactory performances. Unfortunately, the popular NFC is missing ma also the FM radio. For unlocking the phone, in addition to using the biometric sensor on the rear, we can rely on the Face Unlock which was quite reactive even in low light conditions.

Before I introduce the last topic, I'll talk about autonomy which materializes with one battery from 4035 mAh, able to offer a complete working day without any problem. Honestly I would have expected something more in terms of use, but mine 5 / 6 hours of active screen I have always cashed them in and sometimes, with less intensive use, I managed to push myself even to a day and a half of use before resorting to recharging, which takes place with the charger supplied, in a super rapid way. 30 minutes to get 50/55% or about an hour and 15 minutes for a charge from 0 to 100%.

The title of this review is given by the last aspect of this Realme 5 Pro, i.e. the photographic sector. Well 4 optics on the rear and one on the front: it is the first time that I find myself totally rejecting a smartphone in this area (apart from some super Chinese people). Yet on paper we are dealing with a 48 MP lens, sensor Sony IMX586 which is complemented by a perspective ultra wide 8 MP as well as a sensor from 2 MP for calculating the depth field and one from 2 MP for macro photos.

realme 5 pro

Starting from the latter, macro photos are often too grainy e poco defined in detail, not to mention the ultra-angular lens, which returns one mixed quality, with unnatural and flattened colors. We get soddisfazioni in photography only with the 48-megapixel mode, but on the other hand we lose many attached functions, such as HDR.

MACRO

in short Realme 5 Pro is not a point and shoot photo phone, to bring out something decent you need to take time, have a steady hand and patience. At night, however, forget to get something sufficient, even using the appropriate mode. For the selfie camera, a unit from 16 MP, sensor Sony IMX471, the quality instead is surprising, for the price range at which the device is offered. I don't add any more specifications, because I prefer to let the photos speak for me.

I just add that at the video level, we can go to recording until 4K 30 fps, But also to 1080p at 60 or 30 fps, consider that in the latter modality we also have one in support good digital stabilization, also available for the selfie camera. Good audio captured by microphones, but weak in terms of volume. Too bad that Realme has not been able to offer something better, hoping for a future update. At most we can prove the potential of the GCam, paying attention to the right settings.

PROJECTED IMPACT

Realme 5 Pro, in view of the various offers that appear almost daily in the various online stores, it is an attractive and well balanced smartphone. Unfortunately, the market at the same price offers many other similar if not better solutions. We must therefore ask ourselves if does a technical data sheet count or the real performance? Because he is really a disappointment in the photographic field.

Maybe a future update could also solve the photo / video problem, but the second question is precisely if Realme will constantly update its devices or if in the race to fill the price list and shelves, will it leave out the update aspect? Anyway. Realme 5 Pro, although it does not stand out in any particular sector, allows you to carry out all daily activities with satisfaction and in a rather reliable way.
