Smartphones will soon have a battery that will last 5 years

We recently talked about the solid state battery, a new kind of technology that will help electronic devices be safer. But one of the problems that users are facing more and more often is the degradation of the lithium cell (or cells) present in your smartphone. There are some tricks to extend its life as much as possible, such as always recharging from 20% to 80%. But new research from the Japan lays the foundations for a real revolution.

The future of smartphone batteries is already here. From Japan, a new material promises to increase the battery life of the devices

A team of scientists and researchers at the Japan Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (JAIST extension) found an entirely new material that can be used to build the smartphone battery. This allows the cells to charge retain an average of 95% of its original capacity for five years or more. Currently, the batteries we use in our smartphones have a material called Polyvinylidene Fluoride (PVDF) whose performance over time is not optimal.

In fact, after hundreds of recharge cycles (one recharge per day is enough) the "old generation" lithium battery loses 35% of its capacity and this means a loss of power and a decrease in autonomy after about a year and a half. However, the JAIST team discovered this new material called (ready?) Bis-imino-acenaphthenequinone-Paraphenylene (BP). The material used for the "new generation" battery it allows to maintain 95% of its capacity for a total of 1.700 cycles charging. This means that if we do one recharge a day, the battery will keep its integrity for about 5 years.

The head of the study, Professor Noriyoshi Matsumi, said:

Building durable batteries will help develop more reliable products for long-term use. This will encourage consumers to buy more expensive battery-powered goods such as electric vehicles, which will be used for many years.

From this we understand that not only smartphones, but also other consumer goods will be able to use this technology.
