Snapdragon 888: finally the official benchmarks are online

Earlier this month Qualcomm presented his new flagship Snapdragon 888 processor. It is undoubted its quality and the performances it will allow to reach on the next mobile devices. We have seen on the camera side how it will take image processing to a whole other level. But we were also looking forward to the publication of official benchmarks, that is all those numbers that actually tell us how powerful the SoC is. Well, today they went out. Let's see them together.

All the details on Snapdragon 888's CPU and GPU performance - we knew it was a monster, but not that much

To better understand the power of the new Snapdragon 888 is a must comparison with previous Snapdragon 865 and 855 SoCs. The benchmarks that have been taken into consideration are those of AnTuTu, Geekbench e GFXBench.

AnTuTu

It's an holistic benchmark. AnTuTu tests CPU, GPU, and memory performance, including abstract tests and, recently, user experience simulations (for example, the sub-test of scrolling through a ListView). In the test we can see that the Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 reference device almost achieved 170.000 points more than the device with 865 and nearly 350.000 points more than the Pixel 4 powered by Snapdragon 855.

Geekbench

It is a CPU-centric test that uses a variety of computational workloads including encryption, compression (text and images), rendering, physical simulations, computer vision, ray tracing, speech recognition, and neural network inference on images. Qualcomm claims it Snapdragon 888 provides a 25% increase in CPU performance over the Snapdragon 865. The ARM Cortex-X1 Prime CPU core is conservatively clocked at 2,84 GHz, the same clock speed as the latest generation ARM Cortex-A77 Prime core.

GFXBench

This test aims to simulate the rendering of video game graphics using the latest API, therefore you see a lot of screen effects and high quality textures. Newer tests use Vulkan while legacy tests use OpenGL ES 3.1. Qualcomm did not disclose the number of cores or the maximum frequency of the Adreno 660 GPU in the Snapdragon 888, so we poco to say about the GPU in addition to its performance gains

In the test Manhattan of GFXBench, which uses the OpenGL ES 3.0 API and renders a 1080p scene off-screen, the Snapdragon 888 had an average frame rate of 169 fps, approximately 34,13% and 83,7% higher than the obtained frame rates respectively. from Snapdragon 865 and 855.

In the test Aztec Ruins of GFXBench, which uses the Vulkan Graphics API and renders a 1080p scene off-screen, the Snapdragon 888 had an average framerate of 86 fps, approximately 38,71% and 95,45% higher than the framerate achieved by the Snapdragon 865 respectively and 855.
