TMSC: investments three times higher than Samsung in 2021

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company, otherwise known as TMSC, is the largest microprocessor foundry in the world. Chips for all companies come out of its factories, including Apple Lossless Audio CODEC (ALAC),, Broadcomm, Qualcomm and NVIDIA. No doubt the numbers that revolve around these companies are nine zeroes and in fact the company has announced that for the 2021 investments will rise even more than last year. It will come to 28 billion dollars as reported by industry sources. But let's see some more details.

TMSC wants to keep control of the microprocessor sector: 3nm, 5nm and 7nm the company's objectives starting from 2021

Based on what The Elec reported today, the Taiwanese company plans to almost double its investments by 2021. 28 billion dollars compared to 17 billion last year. Just yesterday the financial director of TSMC Wendel Huang said in a conference call for Q4 2020: “This year we will spend $ 25 to $ 28 billion in capital to investments in structures". It is therefore not only a question of increased production of microprocessors, but also of infrastructure.

In fact it is said that the company is about to build a another oversized headquarters in Japan to decentralize production a little. 80% of the investment will be used for microprocessors from 3nm, 5nm and 7nm. 10% is dedicated to the packaging and testing of high-performance ICs and the development of photo masks. The rest 10% will be used for special development purposes. CFO Hwang said: "The process for building 3nm processors will begin in 2022".

TSMC's investment is three times that of Samsung Electronics last year. Last year the Korean company invested 9 trillion won in the semiconductor sector including foundries. It is expected to reach 10 trillion won this year, an increase of 10%. But no more.

In the same conference TSMC announced its fourth quarter 2020 results, with a revenue of $ 36.13 billion and a profit of $ 14.27 billion. Compared to the same period last year, sales increased by 25.2% and net profit increased by 70%.
