The foldable smartphone market may need to take a step forward to be successful. vivo is thinking about it and lo and behold United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) a folding device that is revolutionary. This is the first patent for a two-fold folding for the company. Furthermore, the device harks back to the most distinctive features of the Galaxy Z Fold 3 but takes it to another level with an innovative feature: a virtual keyboard with light-sensitive projection.
As described by the patent text, the vivo tri-fold smartphone with virtual keyboard has a normal form factor when fully folded and reaches dimensions comparable to a tablet when unfolded. It is noteworthy that the device replaces traditional hinges with a telescopic system which guides the movement to open and close the device.
The renderer Technizo Concept made some 3D renderings that show the possible design of the fold, showing narrow edges between the display, but thick enough to accommodate a sensor set and the front camera. Other than that, two pop up light projectors that create the virtual keyboard on a flat surface.
Optical signal transceivers are integrated into the lower edges and can detect if the position of the smartphone is not perfectly flat. vivo has thought of this solution to optimize the projection angle of the virtual keyboard.
While there is no information on the rest of the device's hardware, we can expect it more than a camera on the back. vivo doesn't usually comment publicly on its future products, but it shouldn't be long before you meet its first one folding smartphone.
