REVIEW vivo Y20s - He is the right SMARTPHONE to buy under 150 EURO

Today's review concerns the third of the batch of smartphones that the vivo company, just landed in Italy, presented to its users. We are talking about the vivo Y20s, the cheapest terminal of the brand in our market, thus allowing anyone to be able to get closer to their products and their idea of smartphones, but without delay let's start with the complete review of vivo Y20s, to find out in every detail.

Despite the economic nature of the product, the packaging is well cared for, with a box wrapped in an additional protective cardboard on which the image of the product is imprinted, while inside the sales package we find the following equipment:

  • live Y20s;
  • vivo branded corded earphones;
  • micro USB cable for charging and data transfer;
  • wall power supply with European socket and max output 9V - 2A / 18W;
  • pin for removing the SIM tray;
  • quick guide and multilingual warranty card (including Italian);
  • protective plastic film pre-applied on the front glass of the smartphone.

SAR values: 1,32 W / Kg (body), 1,49 W / Kg (Head).

Vivo Y20s is a cheap smartphone, yes, but well made so much so that the processing of the materials and the assembly of the device give this a decidedly more premium aspect than it actually is. We therefore have on the back a back cover made entirely of polycarbonate, the surface of which has been treated in such a way as to return the play of light based on the inclination of the phone, although I must point out that instead the oleophobic treatment is almost nil, retaining many fingerprints and dirty in general. A real shame considering the fact that there is no protective cover, however available for a few euros directly on Amazon.

The rear is interrupted only by the photographic module, a rectangular block, poco protruding from the body and which houses 3 optics as well as the single LED flash. So clean, smooth and modern design, exactly like the upper profile of the smartphone while below are the 3,5 mm jack input, the main microphone, micro USB input with OTG support and the system speaker. Profiles made of opaque plastic, slightly curved for a better grip of the smartphone, further facilitated by a groove on the right side, in which the power button and the volume rocker have been inserted.

But be careful, because below the power button the fingerprint sensor has been integrated, either for the position, or for the quality of the sensor used, it allows the smartphone to be unlocked quickly and above all reliably 10 times out of 10. , while giving a modern and premium look to the Y20s live.

On the left profile we find instead the only presence of the triple-slot SIM cart, as two dedicated to the SIM in nano format and the third to the micro SD to expand the memory with support up to 256 GB. We therefore do not have a second microphone for the reduction of environmental noise on call, but net of this, the quality in conversation has always proved to be optimal and clear, much better than many rivals. In addition to this, we have support for the 20 band, but I have never been able to hook the 4G + signal, probably not being able to aggregate all the bands, but despite this the speed in navigation proved to be spectacular, reaching 109 Mbps in download and over 60 Mbps in upload, practically on a par with other top-of-the-range smartphones tested in the past, equipped with 5G and with 4G + signal hooking.

We are talking about a smartphone with dimensions equal to 164,41 × 76,32 × 8,41 mm for a weight of 192,3 grams, justified by the presence of a 5000 mAh battery that supports fast charging at 18W. A full recharge takes place in about 2 hours and 15 minutes which in the worst case always guarantees a day of intense work, always performing at least 7 hours of display on, but for less geek users, vivo Y20s will also allow you to reach 2 / 3 days of uninterrupted use.

Despite the non-compact dimensions, the smartphone also holds well in one hand and overall we can move very well in the system interface both by means of the virtual buttons on the screen and with the comfortable gestures of the software. Before talking to you about the display, however, I also want to praise the optimization of the frames that surround the panel, as they are not properly marked, with a lower chin, all in all, not pronounced, while a drop notch extends on the upper frame that incorporates the selfie camera. which also allows unlocking by means of face recognition, which in turn is fast and reliable even in low light conditions. Finally we find the ear capsule and the proximity and brightness sensors that do their job very well, but unfortunately the notification LED is absent.

I say unfortunately because vivo Y20s offers a 6,51-inch diagonal IPS LCD nature display in HD + resolution (1600 x 720 pixels) in 20: 9 format, so we do not have the Always on Display to suggest the possible presence of notifications, therefore having to always rely on the unlocking of the display which, moreover, can also be done with a double tap, which also allows the relative block without going through the power button.

And you may be thinking that an HD + display has no reason to exist nowadays, but in reality you are wrong, first of all because the chromatic fidelity of this panel is noteworthy, with very bright colors, but if necessary you can also act on the color temperature directly through software, but above all net of the "low" resolution we also have the DRM Widevine L1 certification, also for Amazon Prime Video, in the face for example of POCO M3 which boasts a Full HD panel but which is lost in Amazon streaming. Moreover, even the touchscreen was always fluid and responsive to the touch, so the multimedia experience is definitely promoted, even in the audio field, although we have only one mono speaker available, which overall offers a balanced sound and generous volume.

Vivo Y20s is animated by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 460 processor, octacore solution with maximum clock at 1,8 GHz which is accompanied by the Adreno 610 GPU, 4 GB of LPDDR4X RAM memory and 128 GB of internal storage UFS 2.1, expandable via micro SD. We therefore have the same hardware specifications that we have seen on the OnePlus N100, but vivo has been better able to optimize all the processes and enhance the performance of this range base SoC, so much so that in some areas it seems to have a much more powerful processor.

We are therefore able not only to carry out the classic daily operations, such as internet browsing, social media, messaging etc .. but also to obtain a more than satisfactory gaming experience even with titles such as Call of Duty Mobile, Asphalt 9, Real Racing 3 etc ..

Ok, we don't have the graphic details to the maximum, but we didn't even have them on the OnePlus N100, yet the much acclaimed OxygenOS did not work the miracles that the vivo FunTouchOS 11 returned, especially without ever overheating. The vivo firmware is based on Android 10 and the interface itself is very similar in experience to what is offered by Android Stock. We find everything you need to start using the smartphone from the very first steps, with simple and minimal graphics, but if necessary we can also enjoy a good level of customization such as changing the charging and unlocking animations with the face, take advantage Ultra Game Mode as well as using the iManager app, which will allow us to optimize the phone processes and much more.

Then complete the hardware equipment, the presence of a dual band WiFi module, Bluetooth 5.0, GPS with the possibility of hooking up to Galileo satellites and FM radio. The NFC sensor is absent, which would have been the icing on the cake for this vivo Y20s.

This smartphone does not disappoint even from a photographic point of view, making use of 3 optics on the rear, whose primary sensor has a resolution of 13 MP with opening f / 2.2 which is flanked by 2 additional sensors of 2 MP each and opening f / 2.4, which perform macro photography and depth-of-field data collection functions. Here, in this case vivo could differentiate itself by introducing an ultra wide sensor, perhaps giving up the macro one, but overall the shots returned were decidedly excellent, in relation to the price range.

The images are clear and full of details, faithful to the chromatic level, but even at night on the whole the smartphone takes home good shots, net of the absence of a dedicated night mode. Let's be clear, vivo Y20s is not a camera phone, but coming from recent photographic experiences of low-cost smartphones such as POCO M3 and OnePlus N100, this vivo Y20s was clearly better than all.

But to further amaze is the selfie camera, an 8 MP lens with f / 1.8 aperture, which in certain areas seems to shoot even better than the rear camera. The software is minimal but functional, boasting the presence of artificial intelligence AI for certain scenes, however poco invasive and automatic HDR, while for what concerns the videos, these can be recorded at a maximum of 1080p at 30 fps, whose only flaw is the absence of both digital and optical stabilization, thus returning flickering videos. But considering the cost of the terminal, you can invest a small amount for the purchase of a gimbal.

Conclusions

vivo Y20s comes currently sold by Euronics at a price of 149 euros, a price that is definitely tempting considering how much good is offered by this smartphone. We have nothing innovative, but overall what it does it does well, without lag, delays, jamming. Moreover, at the software level, the company has already released updates, a sign that you will always have support for security patches and fixes in general. Recommended to everyone, whether you are accustomed to technology or not, because vivo Y20s is an enjoyable smartphone that is appreciated and that I personally would keep as my device.
