What does Android Enterprise Recommended mean?

Just a few days ago three Redmi devices have been certified Android Enterprise Recommended. On that occasion we briefly explained what this certification meant. However, after careful analysis, we realized that there is still a lot to say about it and here we are ready to explain what is missing. Before we begin, we must understand that it is not a real certification (as can be a TÜV Rheinland or Bluetooth SIG) but rather a "pass"For companies.

What does Android Enterprise Recommended mean and which smartphones are part of it? We try to explain everything in a few simple words

Android Enterprise Recommended (aka AER) is a Google initiative that helps customers find the right Enterprise Mobility Management (EMM) solution to successfully deploy their Android devices. In short, it helps users to choose which device is best suited to a company rather than another. The AER program allows Android developers to integrate Android support into their EMM solutions via APIs and other tools. Keep company data safe and protected is a top priority for companies and this is the main reason why Google introduced the program.

The Android Enterprise Recommended program was created with the goal of select the best Android smartphones. Clearly every company has to promise that they will keep the device in question up to date for a long time. In this regard, we recommend reading this article in which we talk about who our smartphone updates depend on. Back to us, Google not only evaluates these devices but provides technical support and training as part of protocol validation.

What does Android Enterprise Recommended mean?

Android Enterprise Recommended provides a list of devices recommended by Google that meet the specific requirements of the company, to the benefit of both the customer organization and the OEMs involved The devices undergo a series of in-depth testing against the best practices and common requirements established by Google. The most essential requirements that must be met include:

  • minimum hardware specifications for devices running Android 7.0 and later
  • support for zero-touch enrollment to enable bulk deployment of Android devices
  • All Android security updates must be provided within 90 days of Google's release, for a minimum of 3 years
  • unlocked devices should be available directly from the manufacturer or retailer
  • the device must have an adequate user experience in the managed profiles (personal and corporate for example)

However, not all devices can enter the program. Google accepts only those that meet the requirements. In this way you can be sure that the devices work in the best way. But in practice, what changes if you have such a device?

In short, it is possible “Insert” more than one profile, for example a company and a personal one, totally separate. The corporate one can also be controlled remotely if the company requests it, in such a way as to have total control over the actions that are carried out by the employee.
